Academic Growth

I feel that I have grown tremendously through my last four years of college and since my high school years as well. I feel that academically, I have matured in ways that have helped me to become the student that I am today. I have learned so many things throughout my college years, not just about occupational therapy, but I have learned how to study and I have learned how to successfully write good papers and achieve success academically. Looking back, it is amazing to see how my style has changed since freshman year. I can see that through the change has also come confidence. Confidence in my ability to succeed in college, and confidence to achieve the goals that I place upon myself. Change is important for all growth, and, I can see the change in my personality, in my grades, and in my academic commitments. I can look back and see how much I have matured since those early days of college; I can see how then I was just going with the flow. I put things off until the end, and it was evident in the work I was producing. Today, I expect better from myself. I have learned that procrastination is not an option for me anymore. I work on things before they are due, and make sure that they are to the best of my ability before I turn them in. My achievements reflect my dedication, and my dedication reflects my growth. I feel as if I have started from the bottom, and I will continue to work my way up.

I have included in my academic growth section, a timeline of my growth.

I felt that I should include a copy of my entire college transcript because itshows that I was pretty much a C/B student in the beginning of my college career. I always attended classes, but got away with what I could without pushing myself too hard, which results in the grades I received. Looking at my senior year of college grade report, the change in the grades is noticeable and hard-earned. To see that I have worked my way up from a C student to an A/B student is one of the things that I am most proud of in my accomplishments. To work my way up from a 2.88 GPA at the end of my freshman year to a current GPA of  3.493 makes me feel so good about the work I have performed and all that I have accomplished in my five years of school.

The next paper which' felt made contribution to my academic growth is one that was written for Diseases I class, fall of junior year. This was probably the first paper that I really spent a lot of time and effort on. I remember being very anxious to turn it in, but scared as well. What I enjoyed most about writing this paper was how Mr. Penny had us turn in sections of the paper at different times throughout the semester. This technique forced me to prepare and not procrastinate about the paper, because it was not only due once, sections were due multiple times. I see that this method for writing and turning in papers has affected me since this paper was due. I try very hard now not to procrastinate or to try to do too much at one time. I find, as I did while writing this paper, if I work on a little bit at a time, I do not get so frustrated or so critical with myself and my writing skills. I enjoyed looking at the performance areas for this paper and how they relate to occupational therapy. I feel that this was my strong point of the paper and the point at which I learned the most from. I also feel that in this paper, I achieved a better understanding of APA formatting. The improvement in this area of academics is evident through the reference section of the paper. At the time that this paper was written, I considered this paper the best paper I had ever written. The grade was not necessarily the best grade I had ever earned from a paper, but the paper was my best effort given in college up to that time.

I was not sure whether I should put the Mental Health interview in my personal section, or in my academic growth section, so I decided to put the interview in the academic and the reflection into my personal growth. The reason why I' was torn on this issue was because I felt that I really personally grew through this paper. I learned so much while writing this paper, not only from the person I interviewed, but through myself. I took someone's words and thoughts and feelings and was able to put them into some kind of understanding. After writing this paper, I allowed my interviewee to read it, and I believe that it was therapeutic for them to see it on paper what they had been through. I was so glad that I had the capabilities to accurately express the feelings and the struggles that this person experienced. I am proud of this paper not for the grade, but for my success in defining a person's thoughts and feelings.

In ADL performance class, we were required to come up with treatment plans for case study patients. This was something that, until this point, I had never done before, and I was nervous. Not only did I have to think of things that I could do to help and rehabilitate this person, but I had to back it up with evidence and facts. I spent a lot of time researching for this treatment plan, because I knew that this is going to be the kind of thing that I may have to do on a regular basis in the future, I knew I should learn all I could about this. I looked in many of our OT books and in the library for ideas, and came up with some on my own. While reading through some of the books, I read on about other disorders or problems that may occur and learned more than was required! I learned that you really need to cover all bases with treatment plans, you need to decipher all of the special considerations, and decide what is truly important not only for the success of the patient, but also for what the patient would like to do themselves. I am really glad that we could do treatment plans in class because I do feel that this is something that I will look back on and learn from in the future.

My academic growth has contributed tremendously to my success in both Level II fieldwork experiences and in the master’s year. Growth is inevitable, change is optional, learning this through a reflection of my academic growth gives me the strength to know my abilities both as a student and as an entry level occupational therapist.
